WINTON.
June 13.— The annual nieetiugofthoseintercsted in the Public Library was held in the reading room, when only a very small number were present. The Trea&urer (Mr Tarlton) read the balance sheet, when it was found that after all expenses were paid a small balance would be left. A la>-ge number of new volumes have been added during the year, bringing the total number to a
little over 300. The old committee were reelected and two new members (Messrs Crawford and Macpherson) added. It ia to be hoped that more interest will be taken in the matter, and all who are not yet subscribers are urged to become so. The charge is a very moderate one— five shillings a year. Obituary.— Deixth has been very busy again amongst us lately, carrying off one who, though not an old resident, had endeared herself to the residents of the district. I refer to Miss Stephen, sister of Mrs James Baird, who died at the manse on Monday evening after a long and painful illness.—On Wednesday morning the death of Mr John Thomson, farmer, of Winton Plains, was announced. Mr Thomson was a very old resident, and was universally esteemed. His health had been failiDg for some time past, and the end was neither sudden nor unexpected. He leaves a large family, most of whom are settled in the Winton district. A large concourse of friends assembled on Saturday to follow the remains to the Winton Cemetery. Lodge. — A very enjoyable evening was spent on the'l9th after the ordinary routine had been ,gqne through. Bro. Fowler was unanimously chosen as a delegate to represent the Hope of Winton Lodge at the conference to be held in July at Gore. During the evening a number of excellent songs were rendered by members. A debate, entitled "Should Smoking be Prohibited," will take place next Tuesday, and should be carried on with great zest, judging by the opinions already expressed on the matter.
