LAND AND WATER.
The Danedin Highland Bines paraded for inspection on the 12th inst. at the Garrison Hall, when there were present three officers and 38 men out of a total strength of 50. Fifteen new members were elected and sworn in by Mr M'Ardle, J.P. — viz, Messrs Henderson, Gunn, Clark, Williamson, Hill, W. Pafctiaon, J. Pattison, M'Kenzie, Wright, Porter, Sudden, Smith, May, Diver, and Parker. Several others notified their intention of joining, and will be balloted for at next parade. The total strength of the company will then stand at 70. Captain Gillies stated that a very old friend of the company had sent as a shooting trophy a magnificent silver cup, engraved with the badge and motto of the corps, and also the donor's creat, the trophy to be called the " Cattanach Cup." The same gentleman had also forwarded the first three copies of a recent publication, "History of the Scottish Regiments," and intimated that the remainder of the series would be sent as soon as received from the publisher. Efforts are now being made by the Highlanders to secure an orderly room.
The ordinary monthly lecture of the Dunedin Engineers was delivered at the corps' orderly room on Monday evening, the subject being '• Military Mining." The instructor (Sergeautmajor Henry) dealt at length with the composition of gun-cotton and other explosives, and the different means of firmg — the use of electricity being specially referred to, and the testing by Wheatstone bridge and other means fully explained. The corps' annual presentation of prizes has been fixed tor July 18. The Ball Committee at their last meeting decided to sesure Mr Robertshaw's full string band for the annual ball.
