(a) A slight modification in tho order or the opening moves of the third gamer, in which be played 9. ..Kt-K 4 ; 10 B-Kt 3, IS K3. The toxt-move is praferable, so far that White do. a nut gain time by attacking the knight with P-K B 4, which proved so disastrous to Black in the third game. (6) Lasker accordingly alters hin line of play too. (c) With the modification of the defence he is at least enabled to develop his X B and to castle in peace, with apparently an even game. (d) The alternative, 13... 8-B 3, is not promising, and Black does not appear to have anything better than what he played Leaving White two bishops is not bo dangerous at this early stage, as he might find means to exchange one of the bishops, and so remain with Xt against B in the ending. (c) This is forced, although it weakens the Q P, as in the previous games ; but it is less dangerous in this instance. (0 This advance dislodges the B ; but driven it on to an equal 'y menacing diagonal. But the whole of Black's modified defence bears trapes of " midnight oil." (<j) In anticipation of White's Q-R 3, he provides to defend the X UP with Kt-B 1. (A) An oversight which should have had serious consequences, as it leaves the advanced Q R P insufficiently protected. The X R should have moved instead. (i) He had nothing better than to return R-R 1. 0) Here the first adjournment took place, Lasker enclosing his. move in an envelope. The move proved inferior to either 24 B x P, or R x P. (fc) 25 B x P, followed by R-K B 4, could still be played. (0 There seems to be no objection to 26 R x P. On) White has now the inferior game in spite of the pawn ahead, and the offer of the exchange of queens shows that he is quite aware of it, and tries now to play for a draw, Black's immediate threat being Bx P eh, and the bishop could not be taken either with R or K. (n) If 37... R-8 7, then 38 P-B 5. To prevent this move he played P-Kt 3. (o)'Thia difficult ending is splendidly played by Lasker. (p) Steinitz proposed a . draw here, but Lasker declined the offer, and the game was adjourned ; but we believe it was given up as drawn on the next playing day in this position < It is an easy draw. Black simply plays 50... P-R 7; 51 K-Kt 3, K-Ktl; 52 K-Kt 2, R-Q R 8; 53 X x P, K-B 2; 54 P-B 5, K-K 2 ; 55 P-B 6, K-Q 1, <fee.
