LAKE COUNTY.

Feiiruary 10.— The weather has given farmers and other residents much trouble of late, and it is difficult to say which, of the two classes has complained the most — the former at the rain and the latter at the heat, for we have had both rain and heat in excess during the past week or so. Taken i altogether it cannot be said that we are having the most favourable harvest weather, wind and rain having interfered much with the cutting and ingatherinsr. Advancing. — Two Queenstown youths, Masters R. H. Turton and F. Hotop, have passed the ■matriculation examination of the New Zealand University, and will do doubt be heard of as advancing in honours as time proceeds. Enroll ! Enroll !— lt is understood that in view of the coming licensing election Mr H. N. Firth, registrar for Wakatipu, is now preparing the necessary rolls. Every one not already on the roll should lose no time in having his name registered with a view to making use of his or her vote when the time comes. Obituaby.— On Sunday night last the wife of

Mr Thomas Connor closed a life noted for quiet, homely worth and domestic happiness, while still in the prime of life. Mrs Connor had been ailing for some time, her complaint beinjj consumption, and by her death four young children have lost a loving and ever-watchful mother. Mr and Mrs Connor being universal favouritea and highly respected, the greatest and most widespread sympathy is felt for the bereaved husband and his young charges, as was shown by the unusually large cortcpe that followed the remains of the deceased to jiheir last resting place at the Arrow Cemetery, The Rev. Father Lynch conducted the obsequies of the Roman Catholic Church.

A Chapter of Accidents.— Mr P. Maley had an accident while driving a buggy on the Arthur's Point road on Thursday last. Something wont wrong with the shaft, and the horse taking fright, the buggy went over the bank, and sustained some damage. — On Tuesday last Mr W. H. Gualter was driving up M'Quirk's hill, when the horse began to play up, and badly_ damaged the splash board. — On Wednesday evening following Mr and Mrs A. Williams were out taking some bicycle exercise when Mr H. Graham passed them, driving a team of pack-horses laden with groceries and sundry goods. Although the bicyclists took every precaution not to frighten the horses, they started off at a furious rate, and Mr Graham, being a bit of a stockrider, started after them instead of letting them have their spin quietly. The harder their pursuer rode the swifter sped the runaways, the result being that the goods they carried were distributed in a very different manner from that intended by Mr Graham.

Masonic —There were high jinks in Masonic circles at Queenstown and Arrowtown last week, all of which were very successful.
