DIPTON.

I February 12.— We are having very broken I weather for the harvest. If it continues I should not be at all surprised to hear tell of spring wheat, as it is very muggy and oppressive. School Teacher's Residence.— At the last ', meeting of the school committee the chairman . was requested to apply to the Education Board i for an addition of two rooms to the teacher's resi- ". dence. It was decided to give a fortnight's har- ! vest holidays, star tin? on the 23rd inst. Public Library. — The annual meeting of subscribers to this institutionwasheldon the9th inst., .and elected the following committee for the ■ensuing year :— Miss J. M. Scott, Messrs D. Mackay, J. Gray, W. Campbell, and H. Whitaker, the lastnamed being elected chairman and ; treasurer. Dairying. — The proposed dairy factory is still creating some stir, and arousing some interest amongst the farmers. A move is also being made towards the erection of the manse. I suppose it will be started in a week or so from now. The Bot Fly. — Amongst other pests we can i now count this unwelcome addition. I hear of two authenticated cases of its appearance amongst us. Amusements. — Mr Foley and Company played to a fair audience on Saturday night, and also -appear to-night. This is a sign of advancement for Dipton. Angling —There has been less angling in the river about this locality this year than usual, although fish are very numerous, and those who have tried their luck have had no cause to complain. Accident. — What might have been a serious accident occurred here yesterday afternoon. Mr Lee, school teacher at Caroline, was taken suddenly ill, and Dr Riley, of Winton, was sent for. As the doc Lor was returning in his buggy with a Miss Lee, sister of the person he was called to attend, the horse shied at a nasty culvert on a cutting running parallel with the river on the south of the township, and the whole lot went over the bank. The doctor was somewhat stunned and "bruised, Lut Miss Lee escaped without injury, and the horse and buggy were little the worse for the accident. A fence along the river side of the road would be a great improvement, and is indeed i much deeded. I suppose it will be put up after someone has been killtd, as this is not the first i accident of the kind that has happened here.
