The seoond day's races of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Winter meeting was held to-day. The weather was fine and the attendance good. Thesum of £6155 passed through thetotalisators, making £12,837 for the meetiDg. Following are the results : —

AUGUST HANDICAP, Of 115sovs ; second horse lOsovs. Three-quarters of a mile.

The Idler and Vogengang went to the front in the straight just clear of Young Cheviot, and The Idler, striding on, won by a length, with two lengths between second and third. Time, lmin 22sec. Mr J. Tenant's b g Robin, aged, 12.11 (Crawley) 1 Mr J. C. N. Grigg's eh g Matariki, aged, 10.12 (Ford) 2 Mr J. E. Nugent's m g Amalgam, 6yrs, 11.12 (Gourley) 3 Justice 11.13, Matchless 11.7, Folly 11.3, Industry 10.7, and The Shrew 10.7 also started.

Robin was taken to the front at the start, and landed in the straight the first time round 30 lengths in Iront of Justice, with Amalgam third. Folly fell, and Industry was brought down with Matchless at the double, opposite the stand. Justice and Folly refused at the water jump, and Robiu went on with a long lead of Amalgam, Matatiki ljihg next, and landed in the straight a quarter of a mile in front of the others, winning pulling up by half a dozen lengths in from Matariki, who passed Amalgam in the straight, and defeated him by a couple of lengths for second place ; the Shrew nearly a quarter of a mile away fourth. Time, smin 33sec. Dividends, £3 4s and £3 18s. A protest against the winner on the ground of leaving the proper course was dismissed.

Empire 11.2, Clarence 1012. Mutiny 10 7, Victrix 10.2, Unity 9.12,;«ebel 9.10, Erin-go-Bragh 9.8, Smuggler 9.8, and Despised 9.7 also started.

Erin-go-Bragh and Mutiny were the first to appear in front, and the pair jumped the initial obstacle side by side, with Empire at the head of the others. Before the second jump was reached Empire ran through, and passing the stand was leading with Mutiny, while Smuggler was lyiDg third, Kulnine and Kapua fourth and fifth respectively, and Unity last. Empire had drawn clear of Mutiny as they swept past Cutks's, bub Smuggter was still lying third, and Kapua had supplanted Kulnine. As they commenced to go down the back stretch Smuggler ran through and took command from Empire and Mutiny, while Liberator commenced to go up, and passing the kennels was lying second to Smuggler, while Kapua had closed on the leader. Victrix fell. Before the top turn was reached Empire was in difliculties, and Liberator had drawn out well clear of Kapua, while Kulnine had gone up third, and Smuggler was now lying fourth. Liberator was first into the straight, but before the last jump was reached Kapua, Kulriiue, and .Smuggler had closed on him. Here Smuggler came down, and Liberator drawing away won by a leDgth and a-half ; Kulnine second, Kapua, a length away, third, the riderless Smuggler fourth, Despised fifth, Unity sixth, Clarence seventh, Empire eighth, and Rebel and Erin-go-Bragh next in the order named. Time, 3min 55aec. Dividends, £12 8s 6d and £30 193. BEAUI'OIIT STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, Of lSO^ovs ; second horse SOsovs. About two miles and a-half. Mr G.
