GAELIC SOCIETY.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Gaelic Society was held on the 2nd in the Stuart street hall. There was a large attendance. MesßrsD. Matheson and D. Munro (vice-presidents) presided. A letter from the president (Mr Dugald M'Lachlan) was read, apologising for his unavoid able absence. Lord Panniure's "March "having been played by Pipers M'Kechnie and Murray, who also played at intervals throughout the evening, a more than ordinarily interesting programme of Gaelic, Scotch, and EDglish songs was carried through by Mrs Campbell, Mrs Chisholm, Miss M. Morrison, Miss 1 C. M'Donald, and Miss/, A. Ru&ton, Messrs D. Munro, Charles M'Lean, Colin M'Kenzie, James M'Donald, Malcolm M'Donald, John D. Henderson, and John Downie, who all-received their due meed of applause. Mr J. D.. S. Burt danced a Scotch jig with excellent effect, and to the admiration of all present. This,, the first monthly meeting of the new year, being such a large and pleasant one, augurs well for the success of the entertainments to be provided by this society during the rest of the session.
A widow, 50 years of age, recently attempted suicide at Adelaide. Hers was a pitiful story. The sight of her four .starving children haddriven her to commit the deed, and she had hoped that sympathy would be aroused for her - ohildren if she committed the act. She was , dragged out of Torrens lake just in time, and has been bound over in £25 to keep the t peaoe o {or six months. '
