ANDERSON'S BAY.

July 19.— The Pioneer has been laid up until October, the Harbour Board dredge to be eniployed in the meantime to cut a channel outside the bridge. Tho Portobello Road Board has a notice posted at the town end of the road warning persons that it, the board, has not taken over the bridge or the approaches, and will not be liable for damages in case of accidents. I fear the notice will not prove much protection should an accident unfortunately occur. Municipal.— This movement has been Kjuea once again. After this failure resurrection will be difficult. The Portobello people have been exceedingly short-sighted in their opposition. Had the borough been incorporated with boundaries as proposed, the Portobello board would have been relieved of a heavy burden in tho shape of a long stretch, of beach road, also the road across the bay and bridge. They will never get the chance again. The road across the bay and bridge presents ugly features which we had not fully considered, and possible liabilities which we will not lightly assume. Mutual Improvement Society.— The concert on Thursday night was not so well attended as the merit of the performers deserved. The programme was of a more varied character than usual, the instrumental selections being contributed by a strong band under the leadership of Mr Parker.- The band selections, violin and comet solos, &c, were much appreciated. The vocal itams included glees by the choir, solos'b'y Misses Robin and Brown and Messrs J. H. Every, J. T. Wilson, and Christie, and a trio by Misses Brown and N. Bumside and Mr Wilson. During the interval coffee and cake were carried round. JThe evening passed off very^ pleasantly, the only* regret being the small attendance. Mr F. R. Chapman was to' have lectured on Thursday next, but begged off, having an engagement in the Supreme.Court. The Late Vandalism.— The trees on the main road have been much in evidence since my note. A letter in the Daily Times signed "Milkman" purported to explain /why the .trees have been destroyed. The excuse was an exceedingly poor one. Ido not think." Milkman" will find many people in this part of the .district— he may find one— who will support his view of the outrage. The Road Board lately passed a resolution requiring the removal of the - trees, thus stultifying their deliberate action of last August, when, with all the facts before— them, they deliberately granted their consent to the planting and maintenance of' the trees' and guards. No' wonder many of us supported the borough movement,' -which if carried meant local control, and poisibly some slight pretence of reason and sense in the management of our affairs. One thing is certain— viz., if the members of the board persist in their intention to remove the trees, they will be compelled to remove all trees, fences, and other obstructions. t They will not be allowed to blow hot and cold. ■

Political —We have at last a real live candidate for this district authoritatively announced. More will soon follow. We must have a, contest of some sort. It is altogether opposed to the fitness of things to permit a walk-over. Footpath.— The footpath to Musselburgh has been completely formed and is being covered with screenings When finished it will be a great improvement. ' Part of the work has not been well done. Our road works, like our ferry, suffer from amateur engineering
