The habit of assuming a name on going on to the stage is apt to lead to much confusion, and at first sight it is difficult to see why it should be adopted. Much has been ,said against it ; but many reasons can, be shown for the discrepancies between, the professional and theprivate name of many artistes. In the ease of actresses who go on the stage unmarried, and subsequently marry, it would be very foolish policy to suddenly drop the , name under which they have built up their ; reputation, and they are, therefore, forced to retain their maiden name for stage purposes.
