FOOTBALL.

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. . "Scrum" (Invercargill) writes:— "The ball is placed in the acrunt by the referee, and is taken by A's forwards. The centre man instead of heeling out holds the ball between his knees and away go the rest with a screw scrufm to the right. The referee gave a free kick against A team (without an appeal from B team) for this man handling the ball in the scrum. Was he right in doing so" ? If the centre man handled the ball the other side was entitled under Rule 11 (a) to a free kick on appeal. If the ball was between the feet of the centre man, and he did not handle it, the proceeding was justifiable and praiseworthy. The referee should not- have allowed a free kick without appeal.
