ROXBURGH.
June 12.— The long drought has made everything very dull. Fortunately the weather seems at last to have changed for the better. There was a fall of snow on the 9th and 10th inst., and we have had some rain also, which will probably keep things going for a while. The lesson to be learned from the season is that the dam at the Dismal Swamp must be gone on with if the riverside claims are to be worked in the dry season. Societies.— A mutual improvement society has been started, and promises well. The originators are men of enthusiasm. They have spared no pains to make the affair a success, and it is to be hoped that their efforts will be rewarded. There is a good roll of membership. Dr Cook gives a course of ambulance lectures, for which he is entitled to the hearty thanks of the members. Buildings.— The new Athenreum is approaching completion, and will be an improvement to the town.
