TAIERI FERRY.

June 10.- On Friday 2nd inst. the local Literary and Musical Society held its fortnightly meeting in the schoolroom, Mr Peattie presiding. Several new members were elected, and the following were chosen as members of committee :— Mis3 Paterson (Waihola), Miss Sinclair (Pleasant Valley), Miss M'Kegg (Henley), and Messrs W. Martin (Cranley) and James Craigie (Taieri Ferry). This was considered a widely representative committee. It was announced that Dr Somerville (Waihola) had promised to deliver a lecture to the members on the 30th inst., and it was resolved to admit non- members at a small charge. The lecture will be on " Glimpses of Life in India," and as Dr Somerville spent many years there and possesses some excellent curios and dresses typical of life there, the lecture is sure to be very interesting. Mr Peattie then delivered his promised lecture on " Jacobite Times and Songs," which was listened to throughout with marked attention, the lecturer beiug complimented with outbursts of applause. The illustrative songs by Misses Craigie and Peattie, were well received, and the singers and the lecturer were awarded a hearty vote of thanks. Next meeting will be occupied with a debate on the subject, "Is the reading of novels conducive to true education and morality?" Mr Milton Fleming leads the debate in the affirmative and is to be seconded by Mrs Peattie ; while the negative will be led by Mr W. Martin supported by Mr James Mackay. Health Note.— The measels epidemic and concomitant ailments are spreading m this district.
