NEWS, GOSSIP, AND ADS. A female domestic servant residing at Parnell visited a fortune-teller, who told her that she would be drowned on Thursday next. -This so preyed on the girl's mind that she has become "' Mr^T L. Woods, after 10 years' service in the Bank of New Zealand in Invercargill, has been promoted to the charge of the bank* ageucy at Levuka, Fiji. The latest observations of Mars revealed to the astronomer buildings, seas, rivers, lakes, mountains, and trees, the lastnamed being of an entirely different formation to anything ever seen on this planet. But what puzzled him most was four dark lines ou. the side of a gigantic palace of the Corinthian o^der ; and after deliberation he extended his telesfeope 6lin, when the lines became legible, and he discovered that they were very large letters written in black and gold, and read, Lochhead, Sewing Machine Importer and Perambulator Manufacturer, Dunedin. Herr Spottem immediately waited upon this well-known citizen, and asked him if he did any business with Maw,, and was informed that he did a very large business both with Mars and Pars which accounts for this enterprising merchant opening branohes at Tjmaru and JtayercargiU,'
The Krupp works at Essen contains 2542 furnaces. These consume 1666 tons of coal and coke daily. The deepest known water in the North Atlantic is 4561 fathoms, and the greatest depth yet found is 4575 fathoms south of the Ladrones. It is the intention of the West Taieri River Board to borrow LSOO from the Government for the purpose of heightening and strengthening the river protective embankment. There was a heavy flood at Blenheim on Thursday. A slight error occurred in our report of the Clutha County Council. It made Captain Mackenzie the mover of the motion asking the co-operation of other contributing bodies within the united districts of Central Otago, Tuapeka, and Otago charitable aid district, in refusing payment of the requisition for the year 1892-93. Mr Christie was the mover, not Captain Mackenzie. That old-established hostelry in Peel street, Lawrence, known as the Victoria Hotel, has passed into the hands of Mr Ronald Montgomery, who has been in possession as tenant for some time, the property having been owned by Mr John Toomey, Dunedin. The consideration money, we understand, amounted to L 1125, the conduct of the transaction having been entrusted to Mr John Thompson. For the past three years, while in Mr Montgomery's hands, the Victoria has made a name for itself, and secured a reputation as an ' excellently conducted and first-class hotel, not only throughout the districh, but among the travelling public, and the freely-expressed opinion is that iupoiut of comfort, convenience, and the excellence of its management, it is equal to any establishment of the kind in the colony. And in this there is nothing in the slightest degree approaching exaggeration ; it is testimony that all who have had experience of the interior economy of the Victoria will find no difficulty in corroborating. Of the proprietor, Host Montgomery, it is only necessary to say that he is the right man in the right place ; his geniality, his kindness, and concern for the comfort of visitors and travellers are facts too well-known to need more than a passing reference, and we but echo the popular wish when we wish him a long and uninterrupted lease of prosperity as well as a continuance of the esteem and popularity he at present enjoys.
