Private advices from Sydney with regard to potatoes state that the Co-operative Company has been rushing the market with consignments, hoping to be able to command it, but shipments having become unmanageable have been slaughtered to make room for fresh ones. This has been going on throughout the wholo season, and has resulted in incalculable loss to growers and probably to the company,— North Otago Times.

A report by Messrs Edward Jacobs and Son, fruit brokers, of Coveut Garden Market, on 3105 cases of Tasmanian apples, ex s.s. Elderslie, sold dining the first week of June last, has been received by Mr M. Murphy, chairman of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association. The carelessness shown in shipping the fruit is manifested by the fact that the whole of the cases, with very few exceptions, are described as "bad," "very bad," "rotten, 1 " completely rotten," "wet," or " worthless." Some of those marked " bad " realised 7s a case, but many of the others fetched no more than 2s (3d a case, and some were not sold at all. The fate of this shipment shows what danger there is of damaging a promising industry by shipping unsuitable fruit in an unsuitable condition. — Lyttelton Times.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have received the following cablegrams from their London office. Dated 30th July: — "Frozen Meat: New Zealand mutton— The tone of the market is better ; Canterbury mutton is worth 4d per lb. New Zealand BeefHindquarters is worth 3Jd per lb ; other quotati ns unchanged s.nce last cablegram. Tallow: Tallow is dull of sale. Fine mutton tallow is worth 25s 9d per cwt, good beef is worth 23s 9d per cwt." Dated August 2 :— " Wheat and flour : Market inactive. New Zealand wheat, longberried, is worth 34s Od per 4961b. Other quotations unchanged since last cablegram. Quotations nominal."
