THE WOOL SALES.
London, July 14. The wool sales closed spiritedly compared with the May series. In merinos sound combing greasy fetched -£d higher, and other qualities -£d lower than at the last closing rates. Good crossbreds closed from par to -£d higher. British buyers purchased 155,000 bales, Continental 164,000, American 21,000, and 43,000 were withheld. The prospects of an advance at the next series are doubtful. The following private cablegrams have also been received : — The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company : " The sales closed this day at the level of last sales, except scoured merino, superior. Scoured merino, medium and inferior, and medium greasy crossbred are Id per lb lower ; greasy merino, medium and inferior, and washed merino, medium and inferior, are id to Id per lb lower ; coarse greasy crossbred, greasy crossbred lambs, greasy merino lambs (medium and inferior), and coarse scoured crossbred are £d per lb lower. Fine greasy crossbred has advanced id to Id per lb. Competition on French account is sluggish. The total quantity sold during the past sales is 338,000 bales, of which 164,000 bales have been taken for the Continent and 21,000 for America. It is estimated that 44,000 bales have been held over for future disposal. 1 ' Messrs Dalgety and Co. : "Wool sales closed ; prices fairly maintained, without further change. Out of the net quantity available for sale, some 153,000 bales have been sold for Home consumption, 164,000 bales for the Continent, and 21,000 bales for America, leaving 44,000 bales to be carried forward next series." Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. : "Oc late market has been weak and irregular. Sales have closed with animation. Compared with opening rates, extra good greasy merino and fine and coarse greasy crossbred show no change. Prices for medium crossbred have declined 5 per cent., and for inferior and medium merino 7£ per cent. For scoured merino and crossbred, market is weak. Fortyfive thousand bales held over."
