WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this County Council wa§ held in the county offioes, Palmerston, yesterday when there were present the Chairman (Mr A. D. Bell), and Grs T. Dent. C. S. Hay, J. Hartstonge, jun., D. Kennedy, T. Muir, A. M'Laren, D. M'Leod, and J. K. Robertson. PETITION. Messrs H. Clark, D. Finnic, J. Fraser, W. Dodd, and GK Olark (Moonlight), petitioned the council to expend £60 or £70 from the land fund, to which they were contributors from their deferred payment sections and small grazing runs in the Budle district, on Htffernan'a road, and the balance on Clark's road and eliewhere within the block where the inspector considered the expenditure moit required. — Or Hay supported the application, and pointed out that the petitioners did not ask for a heavy traffic road, but one sufficient to enable them to nse a spring cart in driving from one district to another. He moved— "That the prayer of the petition be granted."— Cr Kbnmedt seconded the motion pro forma. —Or Hartbtongk would not vote either for or against the motion.— The Chairman moved at an amendment—" That the consideration of the application be postponed for three months, " He urged that the petitioners ought to have a deviation if the road was In the wrong place, and pointed out that no harm could reuult from deferring the matter.— Cr M'Labkn seconded the amendment, which Cr Habtstokgk supported.— The amendment was carried. DEPUTATION. Mr J. Douglas, Mount Boyal, waited on the council in reference to a deviation in road from Stenhouse'a to the railway station. He suggested that the matter should be referred to the inspector. He was prepared to give the land necessary for the deviation in exchange for the old road line.— The inspeotor wa» instructed to report on the road at the next meeting. FEfAHOK. The Finance Committee recommended the payment of accounts for the month amounting to £245 6s sd,— Agreed to. inspbotob's bbpobt. Bushy Biding.— ln this riding the roads were in good order, except the Allandale road to Bushy station, the frosts and the heavy cart traffio having damaged this part of the road to such an extent as to require some 1000 cubic yardi of gravel to repair the wont portions. Two culverts on the south side of Wrights required renewing. The dairy factory road had been made and was now a good road, In the Goodwood riding a good useful oart road had been cleared in the Maori Bush settlement.— Becelved and approved, and, on the motion of Cr M'Lkod, tenders to be called for gravelling Busby road. Macrae's Biding.— Except about 30 obains of the boundary road between the Taieri County and the Waihemo county the roads in this riding were in good order. The Taieri Oounoil were responsible for half cost of repairs to boundary road. . In going to Macraes township there was a race close to the road which the inspector did not consider safe, and a» there would be no difficulty in removing 16 back'some distance lie Invited an expression of opinion from the counoil as to the steps to be taken.— Beoeived ; ana the work in connection with the boundary road to be carried out, but the Taieri County Council to be written to first. Dunback Biding.— After inspecting the application of Mr Mallock re fence on Glovers property, the inspeotor expressed the opinion that the fence had been erected on the river side, and would have to be removed to the upper side, a distance of 25 chains, i Asuitable baok could be made, but there was & dam .to cross which made the water 2ft deep. The dam waa temporary, and belonged to a Chinaman. There . was a dangerous place at the river, the water cutting ; badly into, the road, whioh would have to be turned. i The work could be done by a man in nine or 10 . days, with a team two or three days to cart stones.— .' From the Chief Surveyor, Dunedin, enclosing plan and specifications of road through sections fl, 12, and 42, and 5, blook I, Hawksbury district, duly approved, and drawing attention to seofcion 17 of " The Public Works Act 1882 Amendment Act 1881," which makes it imperative that a plan of the road deviation should be forwarded to the office to enable it to be recorded oq the map*. A legal transfer of the part oooupied by the road would be required.— Beferred to the chairman to take* what action he might deem necessary. From Messrs W. Bobertson and T. Muir, Palmerston, complaining of cattle trespassing on the county roads, and asking for relief .—Keceived ; the matter having been referred to the ranger. From the DUtriot Land Office, Dunedin, intimating that the sum of £149 14» 3d had been paid to the credit of the council at the Colonial Biok, Dunedin, . being moneys accrued from deferred payment and perpetual lease "thirds" aud small grazing run " fourths " during the period from February 2to May 2, 1891. as under:— Deferred payments : Dunbaok, £6 19s 4d ; Highlay, £4 13s 2d ; fiudle, 10s 7d ; .Waihemo, £2 16s 8d ;— total, £14 13s 2d. Farnie, Dunedin, stating that with a view of obviating the unemployed difficulty he had opened a bureau of industries at Dnnedin, for the engagement of mechanics or labourers by those requiring servants, &o.— Beceived. From the Crown Lands department, Dunedin, stating that the matter of setting apart reserves to the extent of 60 aores on run 109 for the convenience of settlers in the district had been referred to the ohief surveyor, with the request that the district surveyor be instructed to consult the oounoil as to the position of the reserves applied for.— Beceived, From Mr B. Steel, Palmerston, drawing attention to the state of the road past Benjamin's, leading to his place at Green Valley .
