THE SHIPPING DISPUTE IN AUSTRALIA.
THE UNION STEAM SHIP COMPANY AFFECTED. THREATENED CLOSURE OF WORKS AND FACTORIES. (Pub Phess Association ) Sydney, August 20. The wharf labourers have received a cablegram from Antwerp in these words: "Don't forget London dockers' strike. Bound to assist. Never fear." Twenty-three steamers are now laid up at various Australian ports. There is little excitement over the strike of the maritime bodies, and the wharves continue to be deserted. Contrary to expectations, the difficulty has extended to the .Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, and the wharf labourers engaged in unloading the 8.8. Waihora to-day were stopped by the Defence Committee of the Seamen's Union, who ordered work to ceaso. The crew then proceeded to discharge the ship, but they also were ordered to discontinue. Work was, however, allowed to proceed on the captain representing that it was illegal to interfere with the work of a crew Bhipped under New Zealand articles. The wharf labourers are appointing pickets. Ocean-going steamers are not affected by the present difficulty. A large number of non-union men are offering their services in working the wharves and ships. It is stated that the mombers of the Butchers, Bakers, and Grocers' Unions have been forbidden to supply stores to vessels manned by non-union officeia and crews. The carters and draymen are ceasing work. Melbourne, August 20. Employers are considering the advisability of throwing in their lot with the Shipowners' Union and closing the foundries, engineering works, and factories now employing union labour. _______________
