RATES FOR CARRIAGE OF LIME.

The following letter Iris hten addressed by Mr J. M. Ritchie, president; ot the Chamber of Commerce, to the Chief Commissioner of Railways, on th" subject of the rates for carriage of lime: — The Chief Commissioner New Zealand fUilwava.

Sir, — The committee of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce desire to bring under your notion that strong representations have been made to then by many farmers in this neighbourhood for assistance to secure from the Railway Commissioners a reduction in the railway dui'B on lime. Inquiry by the committee haß led to the beli f that there is a very large area of land— chiefly in the South, which would be greatly benefited by an application of lime -and that this would be at once followed by a very groat mc e^se in the pr.'duclion from such I'md, which would continu" tor ••<•' crat yw-o.
