TAPANUI.
May 12.— 0n Thursday last the second meeting of the session in connection with the Gospel Temperance Society was held in the Temperance Hall. There was a good attendance, and a good programme was gone through. The Rev. W. E. Birks read a lesson from Dr Richardson's book on temperance. Mr B. King 'followed with a speech on the increase of the drink bill in the Home Country, and the dilatory steps taken by the temperance party to suppress the great evil of drink. Headings were given by Messrs MTarlane and' Whitefield ; recitations by Messrs Jarrold, Johnßtone, Colquhoun.andßox, all of which merited the applause they received. Miss G. Colquhoun carried off the prize for the best reciter of the evening. In the musical line, solos were given by Messrs Birks and M. Gairn. During the evening the choir rendered some really good pieces, wnich greatly enlivened the proceedings. Miss A. M'Kenzie presided at the harmonium, and proved to be an able accompanist. The evenine's programme was brought to a close by the Rev. Mr Birks pronouncing the benediction.
