MOSGIEL.
May 12.— The Mosgiel Literary and Debating Society held the second of their fortnightly meetings on Friday last in the school. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance was not so large as at the previous meeting, but those, who did venture out were well pleased with the, evening's, entertainment. After the meeting had been opened by the president in the usual manner, Mr R. Allan gave a song and Mr Miller a reading, both of which •were much appreciated. The essayist for the evening was Mr K. Dickie t and he read a very good paper on "Liberty." He dealt with this subject very broadly, and gave the members a good opportunity of entering on a discussion. The essay was divided under the following headings :— Civil, religious, natural, and last but not least, moral liberty, and all these heads he treated In a manner creditable alike to himself and the sooiety. At the end of the discussion which followed, Mr Allan was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by the members. The editor of the society's journal read the introductory article, in which he asked the members to give him every sup- . port in making the journal a success, A rather pretty little song was then given by Miss Dey, and after some further business the meeting was closed by the president after the usuol manner.
