May 12.— During the past two or three days the •weather has been very cold and unsettled, making it apparent that winter is again approaching. We have, however, no reason to complain, for we have been favoured for some time back with beautiful weather, which farmers and othets have been taking advantage of. Potato digging is well advanced, and ploughing operations have been started in several places. Oddfellows' Ball.— Last Friday evening the M.U.1.0.0.F. held a ball in theAtheuamm Hall for the purpoae of assisting to raise funds to erect a hall for the use of their order. The grand march took place at 8.30 p.m., when clobb on 90 couples occupied the floor. Many visitors were present from Oamaru, Maheno, and the surrounding districts, and no labour or expense'was spared in providing tor the comfort and pleasure of those from a distance. The hall was tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens, and the refreshments, which were provided by the ladies, were everything that could be desired. During the evening appropriate tpeeohes were delivered by P.G. Captain Matheson aud Bro. D. M'Lennan, N.G.
