KAKANUI.

August 17.—The winter season has now-passed away, and we are again ushered into spring. As the season advances everything seems to make aorapid change after recovering from its long period of hibernation. The leafless trees are now putting forth their buds, and ere many weeks elapse will once more look fresh and green. Already there may be noticed a slight springing in the pasture, and should the present mild weather continue we may expect to see an abundance of feed before very long. Agricultural.—Sowing operations are well ad-, vanced, several farmers being finished for thitf season. The mild weather having been so much in > their favour, no time was lost in the process. A good many potatoes of early varieties are already planted, and a large area of iandis being prepared for later ones. It is to be hoped chat the Exhibition will help to be the means of maintaining a payable price for this product. Oddfellows.—The local lodge of [Oddfellows has 1 been greatly.strengthened of late by a large number of new members, and it is expected that several more will enlist before long. August 20.—An interesting lecture was delivered here last night by Professor Hugo on physiognomy, There was a fair attendance, and great interest was taken by the audience in the subject. The lecturer compared different faces to that of different animals. The face of the fighting man resembled that of the bull dog, and the mild, expressive face wascompared to that of the horse. During the evening' the speaker made several humorous remarks which kept the audience in roars of laughter. At the close' several gentlemen went up on the stage for the purpose of having their faces read, and their characterswere depicted in very true colours. The Weather.—The last few nights have been frosty, but during the day it greatly resembles* summer.
