RIVERTON.

August 19.—The farmers in this district are mak-j ing tbe best o£ the fine weath&r we have had for the last few weeks to get the ground ready for the seed. A very large portion of it is now turned over, and a few patches of oats, and of course nearly all the wheat, Is sown. It has been got in in first-rate condition, the long spell of frosty weather we had having left the soil in splendid fettle for working; It is said a thing well begun is half finished. I hope • the saying will apply in this case aud result 5u a bountiful harvest when the proper time arrives. Mining.—Mining matters are very quiet ai present. The dry frosty winter we have had dcea not conduce to prosperous hydraulic mining, the supply of water being very short. The Longwood Sluicing Company, Limited, have got their water race finished, and started sluioing a few days ago. It will take tkem three or four months to take their tail race up t« the point where they expect to intersect the xaullooky reef, from which several hundred ounces of gold was got about 10 years ago, and from which all the alluvial gold got in that part of the Longwood is supposed to have come. They will get a little gold . while'constructlng their tail race, aud there is very little doubt but that there is a grand future beforethis company. The shares are|now|[fully paid up, and they have sufficient capital to carry out th& proposed work.
