THE NEW JUDGE.

Wellington, August 15. Mr B. T. Conolly, of Blenheim, ex-Attorney-general, has been offered and has accepted the judgeship vacant by the death of Mr Justice Gillies. Blenheim, August 15. Edward Tennyson Conolly, of the Inner Temple, was called to the bar in England on January 30, 1852. He left for Now Zealand, arriving here on 19th August 1865. After a long and honourable and distinguished career in this district, Mr Conolly accepted the position of Attorney-general in the Atkinson Government before the Stout- Vogel Cabinet, and more than verified the hopea of his friends. Mr Conolly during his long residence in the Marlborongh district has won the respect and confidence of everyone, and from political strife always emerged with an unstained reputation, while his legal acumen and absolnte fidelity have won for him extraordinary respect and confidence. No better appointment has been made in New Zealand, and by his accession to the bench the colony has acquired a judge who we feel sure wfll fulfil the highest requirements of the position. — Express.
