EXHIBITION NEWS.

An influential local committee has been nominated by the Wanganui Council to work in connect tion with the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. The Chamber of Commerce have passed a resolution to aid in every way the objects of the exhibition. At a meeting held at Lawrence on the 3rd insfc. which was fairly attended, Mr D. H. Hastings, on behalf of the Exhibition Commissioners, attended, and gave a good deal of useful information as to the facilities which would be given to the various districts to secure, a proper representation. Mr Arbuckle (who presided), Mr Herbert, and Mr Valentine (president of the Waitahuna Farmers' Club) made some valuable suggestions. It was then resolved — " That lists be opened in the various centres of Tuapeka county to enable the committee to defray the expenses of fitting up two bays to be taken by the county, and that circulars be sent out soliciting exhibits." The following circular has been issued by the Gardens Committee: — In the New Zealand Exhibition gardens it is intended, amongst other ornamental effects, to have a number of flower beds left in the grass lawns, and you are invited to state if you will be willing to keep one stocked with flowering border plants during the time that the exhibition is open. The intention is to produce plots of colour in the form of ribbon work, masses, or in any way your experience will best guide you. The beds will not exceed 200 square feet; will require to be kept in good order, and well stocked. Each nurseryman will have the privilege oi fixing an advertisement board in a prominent place close to his plot, 2ft long and 9in wide, and elevated not more than 2ft above the ground, painted white, with any writing thereoa he may choose relating to his trade. The beds will be made up with soil ready for the exhibition. All exhibits are carried free by the Union Steam Ship Company's i steamers. Applications received up to the Ist of ; June will be allotted by ballot ; after that date in order of application. Kach exhibitor whose bed is kept to the satisfaction of the commissioners will receive an exhibition certificate of merit, and the exhibitor of the best bed will receive a special certificate. Applications to be addressed to the Secretary of the New Zealand Exhibition. It has been decided to offer a prize of £5 for the best collection of ferns staged during the exhibition, the collection Ito comprise not less than 50 specimens. The Victorian official agent's report, received on Monday, states that up to date 81 exhibitors from that colony have paid for space, though he has not yet made any actual canvass. His rough estimate of the space required by Victoria is 60,000 ft, or about twice the space occupied by the same colony at the Adelaide Jubilee Exhibition. It is evident that our venture has thoroughly " caught on " in Melbourne.
