THE FLOODS.
The flood water is rapidly subsiding on the TDaieri Plain, &M(i the railway line is now clear. The department acted with the utmost despatch, and on Tuesday evening the Southern express was able to cpaie right through to Dunedin. Mr H. Palmer, of Otakia, seems to be one of the greatest sufferers by the flood^ as the water tore up a deep channel and carried away the stockyard near his house. It now turns out that the old man, John Connelly, who was missing from his hut at Ctottesbrook has not been drowned. He left ' •before the flood reached its height, and the othta: day he turned up all right. Mr James Allan writes from Hopehill to say that his house was not flooded. He says :— ] ♦As the statement might cause some uneasiness j -to friends living at a distance from Taieri, I i ■wish to cots-ast it so far as to say that there was I •no flood water at all about the house or on any I -of fche high land* iv tho West Taieri district, thaaks to the embankment. As ray house is within a few chains of the river, your reporter flooking down from the Main South road might think the river close to it, not knowing that there is a substantial embaukmeui between."
