THE MAHAKIPAWA RUSH.
The Havelock correspondent of the Blenheim paper, writing on Monday, says : — " There is no news of importance from the Mahakipawa goldfield, but there is a continual stream of new arrivals daily. About 20 came over in the steamer Waitapu, from Nelson on Friday, and I hear from authentic sources that a great many are now walking from Oamaru and the West Cosst. There cannot be fewer than 500 men on the field, the entrance to the valley being quite a canvas town, for there are over 50 tents pitched in that locality. Tha township ran quite out of provisions last Saturday, so a number of the miners had to come to Havelock to replenish the bread-basket. Smith's boats were crammed full this morning, takirig them back. Most of the miners are looking iv the righthand branch, and there are still three i r four good-sized creeks emptying into the rnaiu one without a digger in them, which have never been prospected, as everyone likes to get near
to the spot where, the gold has been obtained As more people arrive they must spread out, and then we shall probably hear of new finds."
