COURSING. OAMARU COURSING CLUB.

The meeting for the Champion Stakes (says the North Otago Times) took place at Greenland, the property of Mr M'Lean, Papakaio, on Thursday. Though the weather was miserable, all the dogs turned up. Hares were scarce and very wild. About 30 persons were present, and a start was made from Whyte's corner at halfpast 9, and the company went in the directionof the Waifcaki. Shortly before 11 o'clock Messrs Dalgleish and Co.'s Happy Jack and Mr O. R. Wise's Handy Andy were slipped to a leveret. Handy Andy led up, turned, and Killed puss — the run being a very unsatisfactory one. The next course was between Mr G. Aitcheson's The Miller and Messrs Dalgleish and Co.'s Dribbler. Dribbler led, wrenched, and picked up after a short course, in which Tho Miller never got even a show to score. Mr Gardiner's (ns) Mark arid Messrs Dalgleish and Co.'s Queen o' Day were slipped to a racing hare, and the dogs raced neck and neck to the fence, where an unfortunate accident occurred — Mark, who usually is a grand fencer, slipped, and coining foul of the barbed wire, tore his arm frightfully, and went dead lame on the spot. The Queen continued the course, and won as she liked. The next course was the best of the day, Mr Wise's (ns) Kilkenny led up to a very strong hare, and put in several points before placing Mr Thompson's Pride of "Scotland for two points. Passing through a fence on a racing stretoh the blue dog raced by Kilkenny, turned, and placed the bitch for several more points. She won the course easily, and the hare escaped after a two-mile course. Mr Wise's Sunshine and Mr Grimshaw's Phoenix were next in the slips, and when slipped got uu» sighted, but running on soon picked up puss, when Sunshine had all the best of a fair course, ,which was interrupted by°The Miller joining in, and killing the hare. To £ grand slip Sunset led three lengths, turned, and wrenched several times before Brigham Youug got in. Racing along a fence, the hare escaped before Mr Gardiner's dog could wipe out the score made ' ,by Mr Wise's bitch. Mr Grimshaw's Maid of the Mill and Mr J. Thomson's (n6) Lunar were in the slips from 3 o'clock. Several hares were sighted, but the dogs could not get on to them. After running two no courses the company thought it was time to adjourn for lunch, and the first round remained unfinished. Lunch was provided by the club, and the company were well satisfied with the preparations. After lunch the dogs were put in again, and several more hares got away. It was now growing dark, and it was decided to make homewards. Mr Ross, of Timaru, acted as hon. judge, and though wet through stuck to his post manfully. Messrs Wise, Proctor, and Gardiner acted efficiently as slippers. The result of the first round as far aB completed is as follows : — Handy Andy beat Happy Jack Dribbler beat The Miller Queen o' Day beat Mark Kilkenny beat Pride of Scotland Sunshine beat Phoenix Sunset beat BrJgham Young. It was resolved not to run the remaining courses, but to divide the stakes between the owners of the eight dogs entitled to run,
