PORTOBELLO.
July 23.— The ordinary meeting of the Portobello Road Board was held to-day, there being presentMessrs Anderson, Cross, Dickson, Lewis, Macandrew (chairman) Hussell, and Seaton. A petition was presented by a, number of scttlerß in the North-Bast Harbour district praying for a reduction in toll rntes. It waa determined not to do anything iv the matter in the meantime. A letter wan received from the oommittee of the Benevolent Institution notifyitig the expiry of the time recommended by the board for the continuance of relief to certain residents in the district. It was decided to recommend that relief be coutinued dnring the next six mouths. It was resolved to call for tenders for 200 yds of metal for Geary's road. The inspector was inßtruoted to have the water tables cleaned out, and all Blips removed from the Upper Main road, and to repair culvert on the road at hotel, Portobello. A few accounts were passed for payment, and the board adjourned. Amusements.— The new owners of the Volunteer Hall have made considerable improvements in the buildiug, and have renamed it the Portobello Hall. An entertainment was held in honour of the re-open-ing on Tuesday evening last, dancing being kept up till morning. The hall has been apened as a skating rink under favourable auspices.
