WAIHEMO COUNT! COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Palmerston, on Tuesday, when there wera present— Crs T # Dent, J. E. Glover, C. S. Hay, J. Hartstonge, Jan., A. M'Laren, D. M'Leod. Cr M'Laren was appointed chairman. < DEPUTATIONS. ' j Messrs J. Ross and B. Amyes waited on the council to urge that about 15 chains of the road leading towards Puketapu in the direction pf; Alla» B.ros.' property should be metalled. Mr Ross explained that they intended cropping land in the neighbourhood, and the *oa.d aj}uded to was the only available one to tfre > land.— \t was resolved on the motion of Or M?LEop, seconded by Cr Mtjib— " ( That tenders for formation and gravelling the road be called by next meeting. The following reports were received : — Dunback Riding. — The road complained of near the cutfcjng in this riding was unfenced, and ordinary traffic had to go off the narrow track to avoid the ruts. The road was eight miles long, aud wa» in good order in the spring, but the settlers having used the road much in wet it had got out of repair, as little having been done to the formed part as possible, on, the principle of making 1 the deferredpayment money go as far as possible. The settlers recently settled at Deepdell had a fairly good road round the west side, and on the east and south side there was the Stoneburn track, which he did not propose doing anything to unless specially instructed, as he considered it would never prove useful for traffic, there being in thia riding a much greater length of road in proportion to the, numberof settler's than in any other riding in the county. The main road did not bene'flt; the settlers • much, although many improvements had been effected.— Adopted. Green Valley Riding.— The gravelling at PJgroot, in this riding, had been finished, and should prove of great benefit, if the loado were moderate: At Shingly Oroek gravelling wor going on, and the new road was available for traffic. At Davis' Hill the ' road required a new bridge at tho junction with the Main' road, and another opposite Lee's farm. All t the other roads in this riding had been put in good ' order for,winter.— lfc was resolved— "That the inspector -be instructed to prepare plan and specifications for culverts, and that tenders be called for same by next meeting." Maorae'B Biding.— The roads In this riding were In good order. Owing to not being in possession of any definite information as to the amount of money * available for expenditure from Government' he had not been able to lay off the roads at Deepdell.' As a consequence the road could not bo gone on with, as the estimates had to be submitted to the chief surveyor and formally appropriated. — There-, port was adopted, and the clerk instructed to write to Mr M'Kenzie, M.H.R., to urge upon the Government the necessity of immediate payment of the money to which the council was entitled from the Deepdell district. Goodwood Riding —The roads in this riding owing to the late grain season had been rendered very sloppy, and the surfacemen's time having been devoted last month in spreading gravel and attendance on surveyor, due attention had not been paid them. By the end of the incoming month the roads would be repaired; while some work required in the Blue Mountain riding and in the Bmhey riding requiring 1 attention, afforded plenty of employment for the surfacemen. .> , ', Adopted. COBEESPONDDNCB. From the Secretary of the United Districts Charitable Aid Board, Dunedin, intimating that the sum of £189 19s lid was the county's proportion contributable to the board for the current year. — The council agreed to pay the' amount by monthly instalments. From Messrs Bayley and M'Bryde, Green Valley, drawing attention to that part of the main road situated on the western side of the Sailors' cutting. — Referred to the inspector for a report. From the Public Workp department, Wellington, re land required for road through section 36, Dunback district, intimating that under the circumstances disclosed in the chairman's letter, the Government were willing to bear half the cost of acquiring a right of road under the provisions of the •• Public Works Act 1882," through the above seotion and in the line referred to. — Received. - ' From the Town Clerk, Fort Chalmers, intimating that the new tenant for the borough endowment paid Is Id per acre rent, making the total rental £162 10s.— Received. From the Accountant to the Treasury, Wei- ' lington, re the nonpayment of goldfield's revenue and gold duty for the month of October last, stating that there was no gold duty to remit, and that the sum of £1 14s goldfield's revenue was included in the November returns.— - Received. , • ' From the Waitaki County Council enclosing the following resolution, and inviting the council's co-operation and support :— " That the Waitaki County Council respectfully ask the Government to amend section 82 of ' The Counties Act 1886 ' by determining the nuiniber of members for each county to be not more than 12." From the Crown Lands department, Dunedin, re the area applied for a quarry reserve at Macraes, stating that a survey of the area had, been forwarded to Wellington, requesting the Government to have the reserve made. — Received. From the Receiver of Land Revenue, Dunedin, explaining the discrepancy between £177 12s 7d and £179 16s 6d, deferred payment thirds, which had arisen through £1 16s 6d having'been credited to Waikouaiti instead of Waihemo County as thirds perpetual lease special pillage settlement rents from block }, Efowkeabury district. — Received. From the Treasury, Wellington, forwarding cancelled debentures amounting to £1179 under section 35 of <( The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act 1886."— Received. From Mr John Hartstonge, sen., Macraes, complaining of having been put in the defaulter's list for non-payment of dog tax for a dog that did not belong to h^m bu,t to, Mr A- Wright. — The clerk was instructed to demand, payment from Mr Wright. From the Treasury, Wellington, intimating that the sqm of £2 3s 6d, goldfields' revenue, had been remitted to the Colonial Bank, Palmerston,,to the credit of the county, — Received. From Mr H. Innes, Goodwood, asking the council to give him access to his property, village settlement, hy putting a culvert over the creek at Mount Royal Bush.— Received, and inspector instructed to report as to cost of culvert at next meeting, OTHER NATTBB9. The clerk was instructed to take proceedings at onpe against the owners of all unregistered dogs in the county. Cr Hay called attention to a number of small boulders on the Moonlight road, which the inspector was instructed to attend to. Cr Glovbk applied for a culvert across the creek at Donback to enable him to form cross* ing. He offered to pay half cost of same.— The application was referred to .the inspector for a report at next meeting. Cr , Habtstonge having called attention to the state of road near Mr M'Lean's property at Moonlight, he moyed— " That tenders be called for the repairs to same by nest meeting; cost np.fc to exceed £5,t0 ho emended out of deferred-payment nictn^y \o ha&d.''The council then adjourned.
