Bluff, August 17. The stranded steamer Pelham broke up yesterday owing to the strong easterly gale and sea. The forward part has turned bottom up, and the after portion has been thrown further in shore some 30ydi distant from the other. The engines and boilers have broken from the wreck, and lie where the steamer first struck. The wreck, gear, and fittings were sold separately yesterday, the former hems' bought by Mr Bradshaw for £20 ; the latter realised in all £147. THE INQUIRY.— CAPTAIN GREAGEH'S lORRTIFICATE SUSPENDED. Invercargill, August 17. Judgment in the Pelham inquiry was given to-dRy. The comt was of opinion that Captain Greager, having only been to the port once and being without an exemption certificate, was wrong in attempting to enter the harbour before daylight. If the captain had reversed the engines when the soundings showed 4§ fathoms he would have saved the ship, and when just previously he got six fathoms he was in default for not keeping her out at once. If he had consulted his chart at all he must have known that with six fathoms at last quarter, flood he must havp been near the five fathom line and consequently i n shoal water ; and agl auce would have shown him the sunken rock on which his ship struck plainly laid down on the chart. The contention

that if Bignals had been made from the semaphor whsn the vessel was sighted she would not have struck was not borne out by the evideuce, which was very conflicting. As to whether there was light enough to see such signals or not, the court was inclined to think there was not ; the vessel was there too early, or the doubt would not have arisen. If there waß light enough to enable the captain to see the signals from the semaphore there must have been enough light 1,0 enable him to ccc the black buoy, and that ought to have warned him off at once. In conclusion, the court said :— Eespecting the pilot regulations of the port and sailing directions in the " New Zealand Pilot," I can only say I don't think that this casualty is owing to any defect in either of them, although the sailing directions at least might be the better for careful revision. lam of opinion that the loss of the Pelham was caused by the default oE Captain Greager in the instances 1 have pointed out. I suspend bis certificate for three months, and order him to pay costs of the inquiry. In this the assessors concur. The costs are £25 19s. VESSELS IN PORT.
