MOSGIEL.
August 16.—The weekly meeting of the Mosgiel Draughts Club took place on Friday evening in the Athenaeum building, when there was a capital attendance of _ members. The secretary (Mr P. Dey) intimated that it was his intention to present the club with a handsome silver medal, to be known as tho " Mayor's prize " to be competed for by members of the club. The captain of the club (Mr D. Burnett) stated that the medal has to be won twice or thrice in succession, at three different places to be afterward named, before becoming tho property of any competitor. The winners in the several games to play off by 5, 7, and 9 games respectively. The drawing for the several pairs then took place. I.O.G.T.—Thehalf-yearlydiatributiouof prizes in connection with the Juvenile Temple Anchor of Hope Lodge, Mosgiel took place on Saturday evening, when the absentees were easily counted. This time the prizes which were given by friends of the cause were very handsome indeed. The two handsomely framed oleographs (presented by G.P.W.C.T., Bro. Hill, of Auckland), one for the girl and one for the boy bringing most members to the Temple, were secured by Sis. Emma Murdoch and Bro. W. Robinson respectively. A number of books, nicely bound, were also presented for singing, recitations, good behaviour, and attendance. Miss Bums, the superintendent, presented the prizes on. behalf of the donors, accompanying each with a few appropriate remarks. Several brethren from the Right Step Lodge, Duuedin, were present. Brother Rankin, after addressing those present, intimated his intention of presenting, at the next distribution, a handsome collar to the boy and the girl who brought most members. Speeches were delivered by Bros. T. Mackie, sen., and G. Gunton, whilst other members of the lodge contributed songs, reeitatations, and duets; the meeting being brought to a close by the siuging of the closing ode.
