LATE FOOTBALL.

OTAGO UNIVERSITY v. CANTERBURY

COLLEGE.

Christchubch, August 10. • The football match) Otago University v. Canterbury College came off this afternoon on the Christ College ground. The weather was favourable, but the ground was slippery in some places. W. D. Milne captained the Otago, and Haast the Canterbury team. Tbe former appeared to be much the heavier team. Messrs Smith and Hargreaves were umpires, and the Rev. Mr Hoatson referee. The Christchurch students kicked off toward the college, and from Beauchop's return drop a mark was secured by Ward, from which Beau barely missed placing a goal. The visitors then scrummaged the ball <o the Canterbury 25, whence it was sent to mic^ field by a fine drop by Marshall. Bee then "picked the ball out of a scrummage, and not being called back, would have got over the Canterbury line but for being grandly collared by Marshall. Pretty passing by the reds then menaced tHe Otago goal, and Craddock, Bean, and Webb showed up well, but Otago played the stronger forward game, and worked gradually to the other end, a dashin run by Bee

placing Canterbury on the defensive. The .scrummages here were long and hard, and ultimately en attempted pot by J. Fitzgerald caused Canterbury to forcedown, a proceeding which they immediately had to repeat from a hard kick out of a scrummage. Several marks only resulted in ineffectual efforts at goal by Otago, and M'lntyre got close to the Canterbury goal by a dashing run before he was collared, and the ball going over the line was only just secured by the reds after a scramble /or it. The play was then on neutral ground until halftime, which was reached with no score to either side. The second spell was begun well by the reds, and Craddock and Webb took the ball up to the blues' line, but W. Fitzgerald dropped into touch half-way up the ground, and some sharp passing placed the Christchurch goal in danger, from which Marshall relieved it by a fine run and kick. Bean followed this up with a grand run, and passed to Haast, but the Otago backs were on the spot and saved their lines. Some very good play on both sides took place here, the blues being unable to get their opponents far away. Craddock marked close to touch, but Bean's good kick was resultless. The blues got in front of the ball at kicking off, and it was brought back to the twenty-five and mauled. From behind the maul Webb attempted a pot ; the ball rebounding from ono of the forwards was followed up and carried by W. Fitzgerald into the Canterbury 25, and passes right across the field were all but successful in getting over the line. Immediately afterwards Bee made a good run, and easily fending off Marshall, got a try in a good position. Bee took the place kick himself, but missed the goal. Keen scrummages in the Christchurch 25 ensued, and before long M'Nab got ovor the line out of a maul and got a try behind the goal post. Bee missed this easiest of kicks. The next incident was a dribbling rush of the red forwards, and Pope and Webb made fine dashes to score, a»d Marshall closely missed dropping a goal. Some scrambling play took the balUnto Otago ground, and Webb getting hold of it ran up to the line, and kicking the ball before him when tackled, followed up and secured a try. Though it was very far out, Bean kicked the goal magnificently, and Canterbury College won just on the call of " No side" by five points to four.
