St. Mary's Orphanage, Bishopsgrove.
T;iis institution, which was started I'.vo or thrc.s years ago by Bishop Novill suul Mr* Ne\ill, has now twelve regular inmate. Wo learn from the report that "Miss Cox continues her excellent management of the institution with such assistance as i:i necessary, nvl Unb Misf. ELlicl Kevill has biion inilef:i'Jyt!)l.> m toacliing {ho, children daily." The ivf: -i!. I'urIhci 1 ackit; that "kind and m several fa--».s >;;>.- solicited support has been given very nt arl.v to
the extent of providing for maintenance." It is refreshing to see that this unpretentious but useful institution has a place m the hearts of many persons and societies, judging from their contributions m money and kind. But valuable as is the assistance rendered, the burden of its support rests on the shoulders of Bishop Nevill and his family. The report says "the management would be very grateful for special help to enable* them to discharge the debt on the building, represented by Mr Tapper's account and the money due to the bank," amounting m all to £91 . It is refreshing to meet with persons m these days who have faith to rely on Christian people for the means of support for orphan girls. We are not always m accord with Dr Nevill on better educational or ecclesiastical matters ; but m this enterprise, which seeks the Christian and industrial training of orphans, we gladly commend him and it to the grace of God and to our readers. In this enterprise his object is so noble that we have no hesitation m asking on its behalf the gifts and prayers of our readers. The orphanage is no convent, for " visitors are welcomed and shown over the house any afternoon on week days, and the managers earnestly desire to enlist the sympathies of the people generally m their not unimportant undertaking." Whilst we should prefer to see the orphanage under the direction of representatives of the churches, we feel constrained to commend the Bishop and his wife for commencing it and continuing to manifest the kindest interest m its extension aud management. We gladly recommend it to the consideration of our readers as deserving of their prayers and support.— N. Z. Presbyterian.
