Supreme Court, Invercargill. INVERCARGILL, August 25.
At the Supreme Court to-day William Gibson, of Shotover, was found guilty •of perjiuy, sentence being deferred. The charge arose out of the bankruptcy "of accused's father, Thomis Gibson, who will be tried to-morrow on " Ijfcimilar oharge. At the timo of the bankruptcy adispjite arose as to the'ownership of a pair of harrows on bankrupt's premises. Evidence was taken before the Assignee as to the ownership of these, and the father, Thomas Gibson, stated that be did not claim the harrows, and that they had been bought' from one Cheguidden by his Jon \7illiani. Tho son made a sworn, declaration Jo tie same effect.' Afterwards (Jhepuidden ■ued William Gibson in the R.fll. C»urt, Queens'fcown, and swore that he sold the Narrows to Wiliiam Gibson, and they had not been paid for. Thst statement wasin accordance with the previous statements of the" Gibsons. However, Thomas Gibson swore, contrary to his previous statement, that he had bought the harrows and paid for them ; and William Gibson swore also that the harrows had not "been bought by him, bat by his father. They thus contradicted previous statements made in the bankruptcy proceedings, and in consequence of this were ; charged with perjury, committed in the course of tho proceedings before the magistrate. j ' August 26. At the Supreme Court to-day Thos. Gibson ,was found guilty of perjury on the same charge as his son was convicted of yesterday. Both were sentenced to two years' hard labour. James c Christie, arrested in Wellington, was acquitted on the charge of tho theft of a watch and wearing apparel belonging to George . Tucker, with whose wife he had gone off. The' woman will bo tried to-morrow for alleged theft of her husband's money.
