E.NTUHTAiXMisfT.-Tlie good people of Fortobello euioved a rare ireat on Tuesday evening last m listening to the choir ot the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church, who delighted a large and appreciative audience by giving » sacred cantata entitled '• The Lion ot Judah." The church was crowded upon the occasion, and the amount of applause that "leeted the efforts of the singers was ample proof ot the interest and appi eolation of those present. This is the second time the Port Chalmers Choir lias so kindlvvolunteeied their services for the benefit ol the Portobello congregation, and they richly deserved the hearty vote of thanks they received at the close" ot the proceedings. Those who are aware of the hard work the getting up of a cantata involves will understand the time arid labour devoted to this work by the members ot thu choir, and especially by its conductor, Mr Harrison . It was quite a treat to see how thoroughly that o-entleman had tlie members of his choral family m hiind. Unfortunately the Rev. Mr Greig, our pastor, was absent, owing to illness, but Rev. Mr Ryley, Port Chalmers, consented to take the chair, and it is needless to say that he presided in his usual able and happy style. Votes of thanks were accorded to

Road Board.— Tho Portobello Koad Board held their monthly meeting on Saturday the 27th in the Porfcobello Hotel. Present— Messrs J. Maeandrew, jun. (chairman), W. Geary, W. JDicksou, 11. Duckmunton, T. Murray, It. Haynbird, J. Sea ton. and G. Anderson. The consideration ot applications from Messrs G. Anderson, Broad Bays J. Kerr, Papauui ; T. Porterfield, K. Kellas. Hooper's Inlet; for the tormation of roads in the vicinity of their properties, was postponed in consequence ot the want, ot funds, the chairman stating that the Board had anticipated their revenue for the year by £200 already, and that there wonld be only about £250 to carry on the work for the year. It would consequently not be advisable to begin new works at present. I'he contractor tor metalling the beach road, Broad Bay, waited on the Board iv reference to his being stopped taking metal from the quarry at the jetty. Broad Bay. A letter on the subject was read from the- engineer, and after discussion it was decided to procure the metal from another quarry, at an advance of (id per yard, or 6s per cubic yard iv all. Tenders were opened for metalling a portion of the Beach road below the drillshed, and ,Mr Pickering's tender at 4s 6d per cubic yard was accepted, A rate of three farthings in the pound was made for Che year Accounts to the amount of £101 were pahsed for payment, after which the meeting adjourned.
