Dr Walsh, Bishop of Kildare, has been appointed Archbishop of Dublin, in succession to the late Cardinal M'Cabe. It is announced that the Queen has been pleased to confer the Order of the Garter on Earl Kimberley, and the Grand Cross of the Bath upon Viscounts Evcrsley and Sherbrooke, Sir x Nathaniel do Rothschild, Sir R. R. W. Lingon, X.C.8., Permanent Secretary to the Treasury. Mr Edward Baring and Mr Samuel Morley, M.P. for Bristol, have been raised to the peerage. The weekly returns of the Baiik of England show the proportion of the reserves to liabilities to be 52 per cent., or 1 per cent, below last week's ; while the total reserve of notes and bullion remains the same — viz., £19,000,000. Reports from various parts of the country show that the cholera epidemic is increasing in violence, no less than 1100 cases, of which '500 ended fatally, having been reported to the authorities yesterday.

Germany annexes all the islands oft" the coast of New Guinea between the Equator and the eighth degree south latitude, and between the one hundred and forty-first and one hundred and fifty-fourth degree of longitude. The Agent-gonoral will ask the Hon. J. Stanley to endorse Lord Derby's approval of the prohibitive laws proposed to be taken should the French Government insist on their Rocidiviste scheme. The London Chamber of Commerce is arranging for a great Congress of the chambers of the Empire. If the negotiations are suecesful the Congress will meet in 1886. June 27. The wheat market shows a slight improvement on last quotations. Two off-coast cargoes have been sold at 355 ; one off-coast cargo and also one on passage have realised 31s 6d. For J uly shipments 37s has been obtained. It is estimated that the yield of the American whoat crop will be largely below the average At the wool sales the bidding was llat and irregular. For the series 228,000 bales have been catalogued, of which 32,000 were withdrawn. The circular despatches relating to the ► fortification of Albany suggest the co-operatio;n of England and the Colonies with regard to naval defence. The draft regulation concerning recidivistes is now being drawn up, Tho Gorman expedition to Now Guinea departs on Monday. June 28.
