Carters' Parade.

Quite a stir waa created in Dunedin on Friday afternoon on the occasion of the carters' annual parade, and the vicinity of Oargill'a Monument presented quite an animated appearance as the carters from various parts of tho city assembled to take part in the proceaShortly before 8 o'clock Messrs Bacon's large drag, drawn by a quartette of greys, took the lead. In the drag were accommodated the Industrial School Band, who played a number of spirited airs with untiring zeal ; closely following were two other four-in-hande, and then came Messrs A. Mollison and Co'a draught horses in pairs, Theße were indeed splendid specimens of horseflesh, and were gaily decorated in accordance with the usual

custom upon such a gala-day. This firm bad over 50 draught horses in the parade, and every animal looked in the pink of condition. Besides the firm already mentioned, Messrs Martin and Watson had five double teams and fivo single teams, while in addition to these Mea»rs Lambton hod a large number of aincle arays ; as also had Messrs Fuller, Gore, Swan, W. Barnes, M'Kewen, Edmond, Clarke and Wright, Benuett. and Bensloy. Expresses wore represented by Campbell and Crust, A. aua I. Inglis, and J. Stephenson. A little carl; drsvtvn by a piebald pony, in which were saated a number of youngsters with faces blackenod, and sporting antiquated umbrellas, was a Bource of amusement to the crowd which followed the procession, The direction taken for the parade waa from GargiU's Monument aiong Princes and George streets, do?/n Union atreet,,along Castle ofcreet, into Frederick street, and 'baok again along Princes street, when, after parading along Princes street south, and making a detour round by the goods-sheds, a halt was made in front of Sargood'p, whore, aiter a short time, a dispersion took place. Where the procession could be seen to i.he b*st advantage was in George street, and tho length of it extended from the Octagon to beyond Kuox Church. Before the parade commenced Messrs A. Molliaon and Co. had a photograph taken of their entire turn-out, consisting of about 40 conveyances and nearly 60 horsos. Lately a sick and accident fund has been inaugurated for the benefit of those engaged as carters throughout the city, and as the body are numerically strong, there is every reason to believe that tha fund will be well supported, and prove of much, assistance in cases of need.
