Educational —Our District School was closed in the beginning of last week (on account of whoopirg-cough bainir so prevalent) for a period of Ax weeks and the annml Christmas examination postponed until school work i* resumed acain, wh^n it is to be hoped the children will be quite recovered, so as to enable thorn to compete for the prizes that will be offered. LEproßß.— We expect a treat thio week by way of a lecture from the Rev. Mr Slorley, on "Rev. Thomas Guthxie," which is announced for Thursday evening, ■ at 7 o'clock, in the Broad Bay Church. Kaik School The examination of tlie Kaik School was held on Friday, 14th inst., by Mr Wilson (of Broad Bay) and Mr Maurice (of Hooper's Inlet). The results, as a wr.olo, reflect great credit oa the scholars and Mr Lucw and his assistant. The accuracy, neatness and quieknoss of the work dono on paper by the Fifth Standard deserves special mention. The other standards were examined viva voce, and manifested that intelligence iv their answers which is the outcome of thorough "teaphing. As usual for this school, the trapping was excellent. The competiiion for the pr zus was very Keenly entered into iv all subjects, and especia'lv in the writing, in which the exa timers had great difficulty in nwardlng the prize 3 to the successful competitor?. As there was only one prize for each subject in connection with the standards presented, the competition was very keen. Suffloe it to Bay that those who were successful merited their re- ~ ward in the fulles 1 - , sense. The following are the names of the prize-winners, with the exception of the girl's name who gained the prize for history in the Fifth Standard, which is inadvertently omitted: Standard V. — Writing, Jane Lewis ; Giammar, Wm. Quinn ; Geography,. Jessie Leith ; Arithmetic, Wm tyuinn ; Sewing, Maria Edwards. Standard IV. — Heading, Martha Edwards ; Arithmetic, Martha Edwards; Geography, Martha Edwards; Sewing, Rebecca White. Standard lll.— Reading, J. Quinn ; Arithmetic, J. Quinn : Writing, J. Noble. Standard ll.— Reading, Jane Wilsou ; Arithmetic, W. Noble ; Writing, W Noble ; Sewing, Jftne Wilson. The Bewing was examined by Miss Kirkland (mistress Portobello school), assisted by Mrs Winchester, of Portobello. and was very creditable. A nunabor of the parents were present during the afternoon, and seemed to talce an interest in the work r>f the school. The Bsholars were dismissed for the Christmas vacation of six weeks.
