Auckland, July 18. At the first Salvation Army soiree, held to-night in St. James' Hall, one thousand sat down to tea in relays. Not a single^ city clergyman was present. An address was given, among others, by Rev. G. Bird (Wesleyan), Onehunga, Messrs Burford and Darman, and Mesdames Darman and Philips. The three latter are American evangelists. The Frozen Meat Company absorbs Fisher and Co.'s (Limited) butchering and tinning business. The directors join the new Board. Mr Banks, managing director, put £10,000 in the new concern, and the other directors take a large interest. A powerful Board has been formed. Mr Banks has gone to America and England to send out experts in tinning and preserving, and the best appliances for freezing. It is hoped to have chilled chambers both on the East and West Coast, and a suitable steamer to carry meat to Auckland, where provision will be made for ample storage, so that steamers for England can have their cargo ready and be loaded in a few hours. Efforts will be made to have operations in full working order in a year.

Thames, July 18. ■ The New Prince Imperial mine is looking splendid. There are about 9 cwt. of rich specimens on hand, and the general stone daring a fortnight's run yielded 1140oz amalgam. Mining matters generally are more cheerful.

Cheistohuboh, July 18. A child about two years old, son of Joseph Urich, a German, residing at East Oxford, was burnt to death yesterday morning. Its clothes caught fire during the absence of the mother, and the child died after two hours' agony. The New Zealand Shipping Company are advised by cable.that the British Queen arrived at Plymouth on the 16th. The refrigerator had worked well, and the meat was in good condition. The Doric is to leave London this month for Auckland, Wellington, and Lytteiton. She has already 243 passengers booked, and brings also 250 Government immigrants. The Fenstanton is to leave London on the 25tb» for Port Chalmers and Lyttelton.

Timaru, July 18. Ludwig Sorrenson, a sailor on the schoonerYoung Dick, was to-day presented with a watch, value £10 10s, by a number of citizens, in appreciation of his saving the life of a man washed off the breakwater during heavy seas last week.
