March 13th.

Friday, the 24th, being the cloßing day of the Pukerau School for the harvest holidays, an examination for prizes was held. The examiners were Messrs Neill (oi Gore), Young (of Waipahi). and Bennetts (of Ota'ria), and they found it very hard in some cases to decide which child was the bc9t, as the competition was so keen. A goodly number ol parents and f nends interested in the education of the young wero present, and were highly pleased with the way the children did'their work. After the examination was over, tho prizes were distributed by Mrs Corrans to the lucky winners. ' Subjoined is the prize-Hat :— First Class.— Reading: Margaret M'Kenzie; writing : James Mason ; spelling : James Mason ; verses : Margaret S. M'Kenzie; arithmetic: Margaret S. M'lntyre, and Euphemia M'lntyro; 2nd c'ass: Minnie M'Kenzie, Margaret M'Kenzie, Christina M'Kenzie, and Alex. M'Kenzie. During the day a presentation was made to the teacher, Mr Gazzard. It consisted of a handsome gold chain and locket, together with a writing-desk. On the locket were inscribed the words, "Presented by the Pukerau school children to their teacher, Mr T. E. Gazzard, as a token of esteem. February 24th, 1882." The presentation was made by Miss M. Corrans (who also read an appropriate address) on behalf of the school children. ,„_.,.., Mr Gazzard thanked tho children for their handsome present, and for their kindnesß of feeling towards him, which he assured them was heartily returned. . . Harvesting operations are now in full swing, the weather being all that could by deaived. The Government seom at last to have awakened from their lethargy, as they have erected a sheltershed at the railway-Biding lino, and havo also commenced to lay the lino through the goods shed.
