CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE.

Wheat.— Good sound milling is worth from 4s to 4s 3d f.0.b.; second-clas3 samples, 3s 6d to 4s, f.o.b ; chick wheat, 2s Od to 3s, delivered in Christchurch.

Oats. — The market is without change, but although little or no bu-iness is being transacted, holders are firm in their demands. Best short milling are worth from 2s 3d to 2s 4d, f 0.b.; good feed samples, from Is lOd to 2s, in Christchurch.

Barle>.— There is no change to report in the state of the market, and values are unchanged. Prime malting samples are saleable at from 3s to 3s Gd per bushel, delivered in Christchurch ; second-rate ti medium, 2s 4d to 2s 8d ; feed, Is 9d to 2s per bushel, delivered in Christchurch.

Potatoes. —The market remains in much the same state. Little or no business is being transacted. Holders aie asking 40s at countiy stations. Bujers are not in the market. Last week's quotations must be repeated— viz., 35s to 40n per ton, sack^extra.

Grass Seed.— The demand continues good, with a rather bare supply. First-c'ass samples are selling freely at from 5s 6d to 6s per bushel, delivered in Christchurch. Cocksfoot, 3id to 3!} d per lb.

Mr Donald Stronacu (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week ending 24th August : — Cattle. -260 head were yarded to meet to-day's requirements, and consisted of 120 fat and 140 stores and dairy cows Fat bullocks realised £6 5s to £12 2s 6d ; cows, £5 12s Od to £8 12s 6d ; stores, £2 15s to £4 17s 6d. We sold on account of Mr Wm. Shand a draft, the bullocks realising up to £8 12s 6d ; and cows £-. ss. There was very little animation in the bidding, and we cannot quote over 22s Cd for prime beef. Sheep.— The number ponned was 1893 (of which 230 wore merinos), but this proved too many, as about 400 were turned out unsold. Prices obtained were— for crossbreds, 11s 3d to 17s (the top price was for a primo lot of wethers from Mr Jas. L gan); merinos, 6s 6s for stores to lls 3d for fat. We disposed of drafts on account of Sir F. D. 8011, Shag Valley, at 13s 9d, and for .Mr Jaa. Logan, Tapanui, at lls 3d to 17s. Mutton is worth barely 2sft per lb. Calves.— Sixteen head were forward, and sold at 22s to 40s each. Pigs. —There were 93 penned, and realised 7s to 335. We disposed of a few pens of prime quality on account of Mr John Duncan at 9s to 33s each. Store Cattle.— We have buyers for store bullocks, but very few are coming forward. Store Sheep are also in strong demand, and high prices can be obtained, The margin between the price of fat and store is very small. Sheepskins.— Our weekly sale held on Monday last was very well attended by the trade. A heavy catalogue win offered, and with spirited competition good prices were obtained. Butchers' green crossbveds brought 5s to 6s 7d ; dry skins, 2s lOd to 4s 9d ; green merinos, 4s 6d to 5s 8d ; dry, 2s 2d to 4s 3d ; pelts, 3d to Is 6d. Hides.— The market continues devoid of animation, but withiut change in value. AYe quote wet-salted hides, 4d to 4|d pc lb. Tallow.— There is no change to report in price of tin- article. We sold at 2tfs 6d for fairly-rendered mutton ; mixed, 23s to 25s ; and rough fat, 17s to 18s per cwt. Grain.— Wheat : As anticipated in our last report, the rise in the London market has had its effect on this, and many inquiries have been made for shipping parcels ; such lines, however, being scarce, we cannot I quote many transactions. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, ast> Co. report for the week ending 24th August a.4 follows :— Fat Cattle.— l2o head came forward for to-day's market, but notwithstanding the amallness of the supply prices showed no improvement on last week's quotations. We sold 80 head as follows :— On account of the New Zealand and Australian land Company, a very prime draft, consisting of 20 bullocks and 20 cows, from their Totara Ebtato the former fetched from £10 2- GJ to £12 2s C;l, and the laUor from £5 124 Cd to £8 12s 6d ; on account olf Mr Arthur CuMer. 6 bullocks, at from £7 15j to £9 10s ;on account of Mr James Griffiths (Macrae-), 11 bullocks, at from £5 to £7 2-i G\l ; on account of Mr William Sa-vers (Mosgiel), 12 bullock-!, at from £7 5s to £9 17s (3d; on account of Messrs Martin and Campbell, W. Clark, P Williamson, and others, 11 head, at up to £3. We quote prime beef at 22s Cd per 1001b. Fat .Sheep —1893 penned, of which 230 were merinos, the rest crossbreds, mostly of $(o<?d quality. Although, the number forward was small, bidding was by no means animated, and two lots of vrry prime crossbrcda had to bo turned out unsold. We porined 913 crohHbredj, and sclid 762, as follows :— On aocount of James Shand, Esq , 50 prime crossbred wethers (heavy weights) at 16s 3d; on account of Mewre W. Gellibrand and Co. (CottesbrooU), 99-1 crossbred wethers at 14s and 69 crossbred ewes at 18s 3d ; on account of the New Zealand and Australian 1/O.nd Company (Pareora Estate), 2,">0 extra prime oro-jsbred wethers at from 15s 3d to 16s ; and on account of A. \V. Morris, Esq. (Glondrm Estate)! , 00 crossbred ewca at 12s. Wo quote prime mutton at barely 2Jd pet lb. Fat Lambs. -Twelve were penned, and fold bj' us on account of Mr Arthur Oaldor, at from 5« 3d to 13s. Fat Pisrs. —Ninety- ohroe penned. We aold 43 stores at from 14s to 21-t each. Storo Cattle continuo in good demand. At Burnsule yards to-day we sold 125 head (in low condition) as under :— 23 two and three-year-old stoors at £4 17s 6d ; 26 cows at £2 12s 6d to £3 ; 21 12 to 18-mouths old steers at £3 ; 45 yearlings at 32s 6d to 87s 6d ; and 8 heifers at £2 7s Gd. Privately during the week we have placed 71 dairy cows and heifers (coming to calving) at satisfactory prices. Storo Sheep.— The demand for all classes of store 3heep continues unabated ; the number offering, however, v limited. We have placod privately 1300 merino wethers at full rates.

Horses. -Our entry for last Saturday's sale wa3 SO head of all sorts, a laige proportion of which changed hands at quotations. The demand for draught stock was good, ever \ lot forward being cleared at an axlvauee on late rates ' We sold a draught of U light harness horses from Christchurch at an average ot £12. 'Wo quote first-clasd draughts at from £30 to £3>; medium, £20 to £25 ; good backs and lijiht-har-ness horses at from £14 to £20; medium, £8 to £12 ; light and inferior, £3 to £6. On Saturday, 3rd September, at the Provincial Yards, we shall sell on account of Mr James Torrens tho Clydesdale entire horse Young Cly o, and the thoroughbred horse Dolphinton. Sheepskins.— We held our weekly salo on Monday last, as usual. The trade was w«ll represented at tho sale, and prices obtained were fully up to last week's quotations. Butchers' crossbreds fetched from 5s to 6s 3d ; merinos, from 4s lid to 5s 8d ; and station skins from Is 2d to 7s 6d, tho latter price being obtained for a few double-fleece skins.

Hides are in lair request. Values are, however, ccarcely so firm. On Monday lost we sold iBl at from 4d to 4Jd per lb. Tallow.— We did not offer any on Monday. Grain. Wheat is in limited supply; values consequently have an upward tendency. We quote primo milling at 4s 3d per bushel ; ordinary, 4s to 4s 2d ; inferior and fowls' wheat, 2s Od to 3s 4d. Oats : There is a slight inquiry for export We quoto prime milling at 2s 2d per bushel ; good foed, at 2s to 2e Id. Bar ey : No sales to report. Values remain unaltered.

Messrs Maclean and Co. report for the week endng 24th August as follows :— Fat Cattle.— l2o head were yarded for to-day's market, which number, although small, proved in excess of trade requirements, consequently a good few had to be turned out, and those disposed of were sold at a aliarht reduction on last week's quotations. The quality of about 60 head was (rood to prime, comprising an excellent draft of hecEV3'- weight bullocks and speyed cows from the N. Z. and A. L. Co.'s Totara Estate. Best bullocks brought from £<9 5s to £12 2s 6d ; fair to good, £ii to £9 ; oowb, from £5 19b 6d to £8 12s 6d. We sold on acoount of Mr J. Parker, Milton, 5 head Ifcht-weight bullocks, at from £5 2s 6d to £7 ; on account of Mr R Robinson, Waipori. 21 head lig.it- weights at, for bullocks, fm>ni £6 io £6 17s 6d, and for cows from £5 2s 6d to £6 7s 6d ; and on account of other vendors 10 head at quotations. Wo quote prime beef 22s 6d per 1001b. Privately we have sold 40 head Fat Calves — Sixteen were j arded, and sold at from 20s to 40s. We sold eight on account of Mr A. Douglas at from 21s to 40s. Fat Sheep.— l7l3 were penned for to-day's market, 50 of which were good merino wetheia, balance good to prime crossbreds. Tho markot. opened very dull, and prices ruled a shade easier than the previous few sales. Tho tr.tde having full supplies on hand, and, prices not reaching sellers' axpec fttions, about 4tfO had to turned out to be held for nuxt week's market. Best crossbreds brought up to 17s ; merinos, lls 3d. We sold on account of Mr James Gall 29 1 crossbreds, at from 12s Cd to 15s 3d ; and on aooounb of Messrs A. and J. Brown 45 light-weight croasbreds at 13s 6d, and 50 merinos at lls 3d. Wo quote prime mutton at 2Jd per lb. Pigs.— Ninety-three wore yarded, and sold at from 9s to 335. Lambs.— Twelve were penned to-day, being the first of the season, and sold at from 6s to 13s (id. .--tore Cattle.— l4o head of all sorts were yarded at Burn-iide to-day, and sold at, for low-conditioned steers and heifers, from £2 10sto£t 17s 6d ; yearling*, 30s to 40s ; dairy cows, in full milk, up to £7 iss. We have numerous inquiries, and have 300 head under offer, but no transactions to report. Store Sheep.— lßo merinos wero penned to-day, and sold at 6s 6d. Country Sales —We beg to call attention to our sale at Balclutha Yards on Friday flrat (the 26th insfc.), when wo shall sell a number of fat and store sheep, fat and store cattle, &c. Sheepskins.— At our weekly 6ale on Monday last wo submitted a large catal gue of skins. There was the usual attendance of the trade, and the various lots, with keen competition, were diiposed of as follows:— For full-woolled butchers' crossbrods, from 4s 9d to 6s 4d ; ordinary, 33 6d to 4s 7d ; inferior, 2s 9d to 3s 3d ; merinos, full-woolled, 4s 3d to 5s 8d; ordinary, 3s to 4s 2d ; inferior, Is 8d to 2s 9d. Hides.- We have placed all lots on hand at 4Jd per lb for sound wet-salted, and from 2Oi to 21s 6d for green hides. Tallow.— The demand continues bnsk, and for wellrendered tallow 26s is obtainable, and for rough fat 17s 6d. We sold sevoral parcels during the week at quotations. Grain.— Wheat: Thero has been an active demand during the week, with an advance in price, but no transactions of any importance have transpired. Cable -rams of yesterday from tho Home market show continued fiimness with an upward tendency, and no doubt our grain-growers would do well to place all available lands under whoat, whie», taken one beason with another, is bound to prore a remunerative crop, ['rime millinr may now bo quoted at4s4d ; secondary, ys 6d to 4s ; fowla 1 feed, 3s at which prices wo have pla ed sevGrallines.
