Wheel-of-Fortune has dropped a dead foal to KingCraft ; while Cast Off, dam of Robert the Devil, has been similarly unfortunate with regard to a full brother to the last St. Leger winner. Concerning the race for the Two Thousand Guineas, Bell's Life of April 2nd taid :— " A new outsider has bean introduced both for this race and the Derby in Peregrine, who cost 450 guineas at the sale of Mr Saylor-Sharpe's yearlings in 1879. He is the property of the Duke of Westminster, and has not r yet carried colours 011 a racecourse. Yesterday 1000 to 30 was booked about him for the Derby." At Rugby Hunt Steeplechases Mr C. J. Cunningham rode the winner of six races out of seven mounts, and finished second in the other race. Mr W. l'Anson died worth £40,000. H. Constable's Will was proved at under £8000. A correspondent writes to Bell's Life as follows : «« i n an article on 'The Sires of tho Season' in " Bell ' it is stated, it very frequently happens that a grey horse is a chance throw back to a grey strain, and he seldom or never gets one of his own colour. Now I have heard it stated, on the contrary, that there is no instance of a grey thoroughbred foal unless «ither his dam or sire was a grey. As far as my researches in the 'Stud Book' extend, 1 have found this to be unexceptionally the case. But, as there may be instances which have escaped my notice, I should feel greatly obliged if either the writer of the ■article quoted, or anyone else, would tell me of an instance where, in the case of a thoroughbred, the produce has been grey without either sire or dam toeing grey."
