LAWRENCE. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
August 9th. In my last letter the following sentence appears in reference to the night-school :— " The promoters have earned the gratitude, not only of those who attend their classes, but of their children also." I assure you I was not looking so far into futurity when penning my epistle. Put relatives^ instead of children, and you will have the correct reading. Miss Horan, teacher of the St. Patrick's girls' school, received a very pleasing address, accompanied by a purse of sovereigns, from her pupils. She has resigned her situation, which is much regretted by parents and children. "TheKellys and the police" has been a favourite game with our boys since the details of that encounter were published ; and the manoeuvres have been imitated as faithfully as boys can copy those things, and a very sad accident has occurred through it. On Saturday week a crowd of lads were enjoying the game— Masters Fraer and Crow being the leading spirits— and to make it more effective, bows and arrows were brought into use. With boyish recklessness, aim was taken at the outlaw's helmet ; and in the height of the fun young Fraer's arrow was driven into Robert Crow's eyeball. The agony of the poor child (he is only 10 years old) was dreadful. He is now in the Hospital. The sight is destroyed ; but whether the eye will heal or have to be removed is not yet known. Mr Isaac M'Farlane, of the Blue Spur, is recovering from the effects of his accident. , Mr Alex. Thompson, an old rosidont at tho Spur, after a protracted illness, died at the Hospital on Thursday. His funeral, which took place on Sunday, was largely attended.
