GLENKENICH. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
August 7th. Messrs Usher and O'Connor having inspected
the first section of the Tapanui railway, passed ft on Tuesday last, and the Courier says that ie line will most certainly be opened to the Tapanui station in four weeks, and probably to the Kelso terminus in ten weeks. While on railway matters I may mention that the surveyors have arrived, and the second survey of the KelsO'Gore line will be immediately proceeded with. Just a week or two ago we saw that the Royal Commission thought this line'.unneceßsary. Whether they referred to the line as at first surveyed or not I cannot say, but it was understood that they had condemned it altogether. . If the latter supposition be correct, the only good which will occur from the survey about to be undertaken will be a loss to the Government of some £500 or £600. Peter Bayne, of Tapanui, committed suioide on Sunday last by taking stryohnine. At the inquest the jury returned a verdictto the effect that deceased poisoned himself while in a fit of temporary insanity. On Monday evening an exceedingly brilliant meteor was observed by several persons in this district. It travelled in a westerly direction, and was visible for several seconds. It was also observed in Tapanui. The number of buildings on the Kelso Flat is steadily increasing, but I would remind the sterner sex that if they wish tha township to go ahead they must bear a hand in the work_ themselves, and '.not leave everything to their lady friends. Last week when I hinted that a school would sooh be required I little thought that the ball would be set a-rolling by the fair sex. However, such is the case, and two ladies have drawn up a petition and canvassed the district for signatures. Some objection is taken to the petition on account of the site which has been proposed. It is said to be on the outskirts of the township, and will necessitate the orosejng
of the railway by the children. Some surprise is expressed at the fact tbat the task has been placed on the shoulderß of the fair sex. However, if the agitation comes to a successful termination I will not be muoh surprised if I should some day hear that Mrs or Miss So-and so had be^n unanimously elected as "Chairman" of the Kelso Sohool Committee !
