CONFERRING DEGREES AT CHRISTCHURCH.
The ceremony of conferring the recentlyobtained degraes of the Now Zealand University took place in the old Provincial Council Chambers at noon to-day. The Chancellor of the University presided ; with him on the dais were the Primate, the Board of Governors and Professors of the Canterbury College, and Judge Johnston. The following degrees were conferred :— M.A., Frederick Fitchett, J Hay : LL.B., Frederick Fitchott ; 8.A., Helen Connor, W. H. Herbert, J. E. Thornton, H. W. Williarm After the ceremony Judge Johnßton addressed the assembly upon the advantages of higher education and the great facilities for acquiring it in New Zealand. The President also gave a brief address specially with the view of urging that careful attention must be given to the rudimentary work. Mm Connor, the second " sweet girlgraduate" of the British Empire, was presented with a bouquet of camellias in addition, by the Cbancellorof the University,
