Mr Skbnb repoits : That it is utterly inipo'sible to supply oae-fourlh part of the present demand in every line of day labour. The new arrivals lurdly get. time to pack their traps and away. Not a shadow of an excuse for jdlera about our street corners. Now harvest and public worke ate now bidding against each other for hands, so that men can choose which they may think best. Girls are at ' last to be got in bmall numbers only. Couples with farm exptrience go off easier now. The building trade is very active ; the journeymen have fully better times tha" the eont ajtors. Thero is room for a great niiny rabb'.t killers. Wagrs : harvesters, 30s to 50s ; daylabour, Bs, 91,9 1, and 103 ; cooks, waiters, grooms, aud boot.", 20s to 403], grooms an.l gardeners, 20s to 30s;, couples, £65 to £85 ; ploughmen and shepherds, £60, £65, and £70 ; milkers, 16s, to 25^ ; boys. 6s to 12s ; ord.nary girls 10a to los ; upper ditto, 20s, to SOj; shopmen and clerks, 30s to 60s ;— wono thau day labour.
Mrs Wilson, Octagon, reports: Good demand for first-class servants for town and country. Best general servants/ 15s to 20s; ordinary, 10s to 153; housemaids, 153 to 20s; female cooks, 20< to 40s; male cooks, 40s to 60j ; liundresses, 20a; barmaids, 25s to 355; nuraegirls, 63 to 103; useful girls, to 12s ; hoots at lntels, 15s to 25a • grooms, 15s to 255 ; ploughmen and ahepherds, 25s to 30s; station hands, 20s to v / 53;5 3; labourers, 8s to 9s ; married c uples, £ to £90.
