In the Forster-Firmin apparatus, as the pulp is fed into a pipe through a hopper, a stream of mercury of required size is introduced behind it. Behind the mercury again a stream of steam, compressed air, water or other motor, is introduced, which divides the mercury into the smallest particles and then forces it into the pulp. Pulp, mercury, and motor mixed, are carried thus forcibly into a chamber, impinging againpt the sides of which they are still more thoroughly mixed. From this chamber the mixture passes into improved washers, and, finally, from 98 per cent, to 100 per cent, of the precious metal is saved,
