SAFETY CAGES.
The trial of safety cages before tho commission was commenced on December 17th,
in tbe claim of the City of Sandhurst Co., . situated in the reserve, Pall Mall. Eight cages wtr"e enteied, and the affair has excised praat interest in mining circles. Many visitors ware present from all part 3 of the colony. Two safety hooks were tooted, viz., Allan's, of B-illarat, and Hassan's, of Daylesford. Both of them acted most satisfactorily, as did the cages which wflre respectively attached to them, viz, Allan's, of Ballarat, and Middleton and Jackson's. Several of the cages were put through the first test, which was that of being detached when rapidly ascending Nuuce's and >7illiams's caught well, the first after a fall of about seven feet, and the other at ten foet nine (inches. Middlefcon and Jackson's cage fell to the bottom of the abaft and was B mashed.
