PETITION AGAINST THE IMPORTATION OF MANUFACTURED MATERIALS.
The following petition has been placed at oar disposal : — To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives of the Colony of New Zealand — The petition of the undersigned, employers of labour in Dunedin, humbly showeth : That your petitioners are aware that the Government require large supplies of manufactured material for the carrying out of the Public Works scheme.
That a large, and, in the opinion of your petitioners, an undue proportion of the required material it. being imported from Great Britain and other countries, to the detriment of the trade and commerce, and general advancement of the Colony, and at the risk of the country losing valuable colonists after all the expensive efforts made to obtain them.
That your petitioners beg respectfully to submit that , in our several departments of trade, we, and others throughout the Coleny, can manufacture the required material, of quality and workmanship equal, if not superior, to that imported, and more suitable to the requirements cl the Colony. And we further believe that this may be done at prices which will bear favourable comparison with the imported article, especially when it is borne in mind that the work throughout may be under the superintendence of Government inspectors, thus ensuring that it shall be of a satisfactory character. Your petitioners would farther very respectfully call your attention to the depressed state of trade throughout the Colony, and would express the hope ihat your honourable House will take the above matter into earnest consideration, and will devise such remedies as may commend themselves to your judgment and prudence. And your petitioners will ever pray.
The petition will be at once circulated for signature in Dunedin, and we understand that the employers of labour in the other towns of New Zealand will be asked to give their support to the movement.
